This volume examines the emergence of Soka Gakkai as a world religion, from the perspective of the organization’s founding and the discipline of Soka Faith Studies. It is the third in a series compiling the research results of the Institute of Soka Faith Studies, established in March 2019 (Director: Mikio Matsuoka), together with presentations by research groups that include external experts. Under the theme of world religion, this volume traces the history and definition of the term “world religion,” reviews how Soka Gakkai International (SGI) gained acceptance in American society as it moved toward becoming a world religion, and considers the vision for a world religion set out by Daisaku Ikeda, Soka Gakkai’s third president.
